Wicked Memories
I was inspired to create ‘Wicked Memories’ after seeing the stage production of the novel, ‘Wicked’, written by Gregory Maguire. The musical relates the untold story of the powerful friendship between the two witches of Oz, Glinda and Elphaba, before the arrival of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
My drawing is a whimsical ink on paper montage of the principal characters and props in the musical production, featuring hand-coloured images of Glinda and Elphaba in the foreground, with the memories of the two witches portrayed in black and white throughout the picture. If you look closely, you will find song titles from the fabulous soundtrack etched around the clock and the time capsule beneath the dragon.
Through her strong character and singing, Wicked’s emerald-skinned heroine, Elphaba, shares her power of self-determination, courage, bravery and friendship to overcome prejudice and false accusations. She encourages us to stand up for what is right, even though it might be the harder path to take.
